High-tech company RM has won a £2.3m contract to supply a state-of-the art computer system to the Oxford Academy, which opened last year on the site of Peers School.

RM, based at Milton Park, near Abingdon, said the deal included ICT equipment and services, including staff training, and a five-year managed service.

It is believed to be one of the largest deals of its type to date.

The Oxford Academy, which opened in September 2008 on the site of the former Peers School, is undergoing a £33m building programme to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for up to 1,450 students and the wider community.

RM is providing a school management system, with pupils having smart cards for cashless catering, access to the school and library.

Students will also be able to create, store and broadcast scheduled and on-demand video and TV.

RM will integrate some of the equipment left by Peers School.

RM staff will remain at the school to provide training, development and support over an initial five-year period.

Chief executive Terry Sweeney said: “The Oxford Academy is ambitious and forward-thinking, and I feel sure it will bring huge benefits to its students.

"It is therefore very exciting for us to be partnering with the academy to not only equip them with similarly innovative and forward looking ICT equipment, but also to be building a relationship with them over the coming years.”

David Baron, finance director at The Oxford Academy, said the "exceptional facilities" would underpin the school's aim to provide "an outstanding, vibrant and exciting educational environment for students and the wider community now and in the future".

"Partnering with RM made perfect sense in order that we might meet our ambitious goals. It is a company that not only understands our needs and can provide the solutions to them, but one that also is enthusiastic to form a close and ongoing relationship with us,” he said.
