Uncertainty as RM axes jobs

Educational software company RM has declined to reveal how many jobs have been lost as a result of the Government scrapping its Building Schools for the Future programme.

The company, based at Milton Park near Didcot, confirmed it has made a “small number” of redundancies amongst its workforce of about 1,200 following a consultation period but spokesman Rebecca Bleasdale declined to specify exact numbers.

A company statement said: “Whilst a small number of roles have been made redundant, the majority of people affected have found new roles within RM.

“For example, a number have moved into RM’s team which focuses on academies and a number of others have seized the opportunity to move into roles within the wider group – specifically in the US and Australia, whose governments are continuing to invest despite the economic climate.”

The Government is now reviewing 15 deals, worth £272m, which RM negotiated under the BSF scheme. This week the company signed a £4m contract to supply IT for schools in Southwark under the BSF programme Chief executive Terry Sweeney said: “Whilst we are in this climate of review, the good news is that we continue to see notable successes with projects such as Southwark.”
