Occasionally I meet the up and coming generation who represent the future of business and society in this country. As far as I am concerned, the young get a very bad press. The efforts of successive generations of teenagers in the Young Enterprise initiative where they set up and run businesses for an academic year never cease to amaze me.

Not quite a flight of fancy

Four years have passed since I last darkened the door of The Feathers in Woodstock. Then, having experienced a meal which was disappointing to say the least, I had expressed my displeasure in these pages.

Believe it or not, people often ask me where I would recommend for a good meal in Oxford. And, believe it or not, despite several years of lunching every month, I still struggle to come up with an answer.

My attempts to gain entry into Jamie’s Italian in Oxford have been documented on this page before. More than once I have stood in the queue and eventually waved the white flag and taken my business elsewhere.

often whizz past places in the car and wonder what they are like inside. A case in point is the Greyhound, situated just off the main carriageway of the A420 at Besselsleigh near Wootton.

Visitors from another country armed with knowledge that the British pub industry is on its knees may be surprised if they take a trip up the A44 towards Woodstock.

Like many others, I find it depressing that such a number of pubs are closing these days. Many are bowing to intolerable pressure from supermarkets on drinks prices, while successive governments have done them no favours on duties and other factors, such as the smoking ban, have all contributed to their demise.

An old-fashioned village pub within the city of Oxford. That is what you will find in Iffley in the solid red brick Edwardian shape of the Prince of Wales.

I took a trip down memory lane recently when, in a bid to avoid the crowds pouring out of Oxford’s South Park following the annual fireworks display, I popped into The Duke pub nearby. The long bar, bustling crowd of mainly students and young people, and the functional surroundings carried me straight back to my own university days when pubs were a great place to meet, share a joke and a smoke, as well as a few pints in a convivial atmosphere.

There is something wonderfully comforting about an English pub when the weather turns nasty. A refuge for the hiker who has just trudged down from the fells to the welcome glow of the hostelry with its real ale and heatwarming fare.
