The Cherry Orchard
The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov is considered the playwright’s masterpiece dealing with issues of cultural futility and social tension. This compassionate exploration of love, loss and the passing of time is in turn both tragic and comedic. This production re-imagines the Russian play, written in 1903, in prohibition 1920s America: a period, like ours, on the cusp of great political change. The period provides the opportunity to enhance the play with stunning visual design and an atmospheric score of original live jazz. The context is more familiar to most audiences and has several parallels with early 20th century Russia like the rise of capitalism, generational divides, and concerns about the role of women in society. Moreover, the general melancholic but, also on occasion, fiery and lively tone of The Cherry Orchard fits perfectly with jazz music and the atmosphere of the 'roarin' twenties'.
