Rose’s top spots

Rose Prince picked out her top six food producers from in and around Oxfordshire.

Oxford Coffee Company
Unit 241, 94 London Road, Oxford OX3 9FN
Call: 01865 765113
The Oxford Coffee Company sells a variety of Fairtrade teas and coffees that are organically produced. Not a huge number of varieities are available but they are very good quality and wide-ranging in origin.

Dews Meadow Farm
Oxford Road, East Hanney, Wantage OX12 OHP
Call: 01235 868 634
Locals rave over the pork here. I was tipped off by my Telegraph colleague, the former Grand National-winning jockey, Marcus Armytage who lives nearby (“honest, its the place to go for pork” he said.) Pork, bacon, black pudding and old-fashioned hazlet are all in abundance. There's also a well-stocked deli section with cooked foods.

David John
93-97 The Oxford Covered Market, Oxford OX1 ODY
Call: 01865 200 922
David John is an old-fashioned butcher working from Oxford Covered Market, which is a treat in itself and a ‘must visit’ place for Oxford food enthusiasts. John makes his own pies, tarts, sausages and specialises in home-cooked meats, which are great. All meat is locally sourced. There are other butchers in the market and a good cheese outlet. The place has a wonderful airy feel.

Oxford Farmers Market
Gloucester Green, Oxford OX1 2BL
Call: 01789 267000
Started as a monthly market in 2006 it is now such a hit that it is held every two weeks. Fresh goats milk and cheese, unpasteurised cows milk, wholesome loaves of bread and butchers selling a range of organic and naturally reared meats as well as stalls offering a plethora of fresh seasonal vegetables.

Daylesford Organic Farm Shop
Near Kingham, Glos GL5 6OY
Call: 01608 731700
Strictly speaking Daylesford should not be mentioned because it is not quite in Oxfordshire, but just over the border in Gloucestershire. There are mixed feelings about the shop too. Some object to the extravagence and opulence of the place. Certainly there are too many Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea parking permits in the car park for my liking. But if you concentrate on the produce it cannot be faulted. The cheese, made in their own creamery is superb, the organic meat very reasonably priced, charcuteries, milk, yoghurt fruit juice, eggs and vegetables from the Daylesford Estate's market garden are all fantastic. Worth the drive.

Foxbury Farm Shop
Burford Road, Brize Norton OX18 3NX
Call: 01993 867385
This is a great shop and well worth the drive from the city. It is not flash, just a proper farm shop in a converted barn selling a plethora of meat produced on the farm. Well-hung beef, pork and lamb, free range chickens from nearby Lechlade and game. Nicely priced wines with vegetables that are seasonal and mostly local. Cheeses, local flour and bread too. I went last November and was knocked out by the effort the Dawes family make.
