Dangerous anarchy on streets

6:50am Thursday 9th July 2009

Sir – I am the person who supported the planned Controlled Parking Zone in the Magdalen Road area, in the meeting that Peter Lewis recounts (Letters, July 2).

Here’s why. The county council’s consultants have done an impressive job, given the historical and practical constraints.

In many of the streets between Bullingdon Road and Howard Street, managed part-footway parking is a necessary evil, much better than the present dangerous anarchy. And the council is right to aim to reduce congestion along Iffley Road, by preventing commuters from parking in the Magdalen Road area.

I hope that further discussion about the fire service’s requirements can show that we do not need most of the planned part-footway parking in the streets between Bannister Close and Fairacres Road, and can retain bilateral parking in Argyle Street.

Let’s work with the council to improve the details. Rejecting the CPZ outright is cutting off our face to stop flies landing on our nose.
