Sir – It was sad to read of the closure of another independent hardware shop. Here, in Headington, we are lucky that we can still enjoy the services of two “old fashioned” shops, both now unique to Oxford.
One is Headington Homewares, which is worthy of its name, as it stocks an incredible array of all manner of items for the home and the garden.
For over 40 years, a familiar remark has been “Headington Homewares will have it”, and 99 per cent of the time, they have.
Secondly, Brambles is a traditional haberdashery, and is also a cobbler. They sell all manner of knitting wools, silks, cottons — indeed all that a needlewoman would want. These shops know what they are doing and provide a quick and efficient service which supermarkets find it hard to match.
