Sir – I am writing to express my strong opposition to the closure of Temple Cowley Pools. Whilst I live close to and use the Ferry Centre predominantly (attending classes at Temple Cowley once or twice a week) and so will not be seriously affected personally, I am convinced that the proposed closure of Temple Cowley will have a significant effect on those local to that centre.
The main reason I feel so strongly is that I am certain that the complex satisfies a great social need. There is always a good attendance at the classes, and I notice that many people are able to walk to the leisure centre. Forcing the current attendees to commute to Blackbird Leys will inevitably reduce numbers.
As we become increasingly aware of the problems brought on by obesity and poor lifestyle it seems to me that to close something which has such a positive effect for so many is wrong. It is wrong not only because of the message it gives and the negative impact on people’s lives, but also it is wrong because of the increasing healthcare burden which will be an inevitable and expensive consequence of the closure. It is obvious that money needs to be spent there, as none seems to have been spent for some time, but I am certain that it would be worthwhile. However, it would be possible through judicious capital investment to use the latest technology to save ongoing expenditure in heat and light.
