Sir – I am on record in your columns in claiming that the county council’s decision to end speed cameras in Oxfordshire was not based on financial grounds, but was done to suit the wishes of rural Conservative councillors who travel to Oxford for meetings.
Of course this is hotly disputed by the leader of the council in your columns, but he is not responsible for transport policies.
That responsibility belongs to councillor Hudspeth who has remained strangely quiet on this issue.
From my contacts in County Hall I am told that he opposed the policy of ending speed cameras, but had to submit to a whipped decision behind closed doors, which validates my view that this is a political decision, not a financial one.
Having paid my council tax I would like to know the views of councillor Hudspeth, who according to the council’s website has strategic responsibility for transport matters, but up to now has remained strangely silent on this matter.
