Enforce the 20mph limit

7:40am Thursday 9th September 2010

Sir – That anyone thinks Oxford City Council’s mounting financial worries could or should be resolved by bring more private cars into the city centre is very sad. “There is no change in our approach”, says Ed Turner, deputy leader of the city council.

But perhaps it is time there was a change of approach, because it should be clear by now that a sustainable future requires fewer private cars and better public transport.

I noticed that your sister paper, the Oxford Mail, has been bemoaning the fact that the 20mph speed limit within the city environs is largely ignored, and many of its readers seem to think this is a case for its abolition.

Far from abolishing a sensible rule because people don’t like it, could not the enforcement of the 20mph limit be a source of revenue for the council?
