Grotesque animal

Sir – Clean it up! This is 2012 not 1512. The piles of dog mess in Betjeman Lane, the Betjeman Park and footpaths by the Letcombe Brook, Wantage, are disgusting.

They need not be.

This area of Wantage is a gem. Whoever walks a dog here and allows it to foul then leaves the mess, is a grotesque animal, worse than their dog. You are vulgar.

This may be Wantage, and not Westminster, where cameras watch every move, but perhaps cameras here and big fines would teach lessons.

I once lived in Priory Road,Wantage, and am proud of this historic area which I visit regularly. I work in Henley, street cleaning and believe me clearing up dog muck is a vile task. Unfortunately Henley suffers the same problem.

Be more considerate, particularly for children, and the brook.

Not an isolated issue, I'm afraid. Some areas of Witney are filthy with dog mess - it is not the dogs' fault; rather it is due to selfish, lazy owners. Of course, owners can be fined for leaving dog mess uncleared, but who ever spots them? We need more dog wardens, and instead of namby-pamby on the spot fines, I suggest a 'one strike and you're out' rule, after which miscreants have their dogs removed, to be looked after by a more responsible and caring owner.
