  • "I have acted as a poll clerk in a number of elections (local and general) over the past few years, and many people turn up with their polling card and ID in hand, bemused at the thought that they could do something as important as voting just by stating a name and a street address. One young lady, voting for the first time, was genuinely surprised that I didn't want to scrutinise her ID - she said that she couldn't access her gym class, her college common room or her local pub without having ID, and yet she could vote without. A strange (and peculiarly British?) thing?"

Polling scrutiny

Sir – In recent months I have seen television coverage of villagers in India and also of President Sarkozy of France voting in their respective national elections.

In each case an electoral officer could clearly be seen carefully checking the voters’ photographic identities from an official document of some kind.

In stark contrast, my own poll card for today’s local election bears, as ever, the phrases “You do not need to take this card with you to vote” and “. . . tell the staff your name and address . . .”.

Is it any wonder that recent UK elections have been followed by allegations of fraudulent voting activity?

When are we going to practise the democratic processes that we so piously preach?
