Intimidating toll road
8:00am Thursday 16th August 2012 in Letters
Sir – Councillor Charles Mathew complains (Letters, August 2) that there is no money for building a community path in the adjacent constituency of Nicola Blackwood.
Since when has there been any money for cycling safety in the county’s £55m transport budget? The two-mile path adjacent to the intimidating Eynsham toll road links the isolated village of Farmoor to the retail and employment centres of West Oxford.
Local residents are supporting Oxfordshire County Council ’s own policy: ‘[to] improve connections from villages to nearby towns, where justified by potential use [and] involve developing rural cycle routes. [The Eynsham Toll Road] is a key inter-urban corridor carrying long- and short-distance trips with its own strategy to tackle problems and challenges, identified as: Oxford-Eynsham-Witney-Carterton corridor local cycle link from Eynsham to Oxford, via Botley’. It’s disappointing that councillor Mathew is getting the issues of policy, finance and other details muddled. An award-winning video is available on YouTube (B4044). Simon Banks, Oxford
