Olympians of future

Sir – I would like to thank all The Oxford Times readers who generously responded to your article about Cheney School ’s fledgling rowing club — the Cheney Falcon RC — last month.

Local media coverage has helped us raise some much-needed funds to continue. The British rowing team has had an extraordinary successful Olympics and rowing is Oxford’s most iconic sport, yet few state school children have access to this sport. Raising funds for sports in state schools remains exceptionally challenging but we believe that the next generation of Olympians will begin their sporting careers in school clubs like Cheney Falcon RC. Olympic-inspired readers who would like to find out more about the club can do so at: www.cheneyfalcon.co.uk

We are very grateful for all the support we have received especially in these times of economic hardship. The Oxford Times readers who find themselves passing over Donnington Bridge on a Wednesday afternoon should keep an eye out for a group of schoolchildren rowing below — who knows, they may be the Olympians of the future.
