First time buyers keen to get a foot on the property ladder are being invited to free events at Taylor Wimpey’s Kingsmere development in Bicester and Great Western Park, Didcot

The events, which takes place tomorrow from 5-8pm and Saturday from 11am-3pm, are aimed at dispelling some of the myths surrounding the difficulty of getting a foot on the property ladder and provide access to free expert advice.

A recent report produced by the National Centre for Social Research on behalf of the Halifax bank, highlighted some of the misconceptions young people hold about buying their first home.

Despite 79 per cent believing property is a good investment for the future, 92 per cent of respondents said they thought it was hard for first time buyers to get a mortgage.

The research also revealed that 84 per cent of people believe banks do not want to lend to them and 55 per cent are scared of being turned down. However, just nine per cent of people who believe they have little chance of buying a home have sought professional advice.

But Taylor Wimpey bosses say 90 per cent of mortgage applications made through independent financial advisers (IFAs) they work with are accepted.

Darren McCormack, regional sales and marketing manager, said: “An IFA is well positioned to guide first time buyers through the mortgage process.

“They can use their expert knowledge to ensure all the information required is gathered and checked before an application is made and that the right mortgage product is selected, dependent on the applicant’s individual circumstances.”

Taylor Wimpey says its first time buyer events will provide all the information, advice and expert tips needed for young people to make an informed decision about buying a home.

Mr McCormack added: “First time buyers are understandably cautious about taking the big step of getting on the property ladder.

“But by educating buyers and offering free, impartial advice, we aim to demonstrate that owning a property is achievable and makes a sound, long-term investment.”

Earlier this month the company linked up with TV property expert Phil Spencer to produce a series of video guides to help those thinking of buying their first home.
