The Goldman Variations: Oxfringe 2010: Copa Bar

An ever-hopeful out-of-work actor sits on a train on his way to another audition. “I’ve got a good feeling about this one,” he says to a rubber ball called Juliet, his imaginary girlfriend. He turns up at the audition and does his best acting and oboe playing, only to be told to “do it harder yet softer” by a frosty judging panel. He faces constant rejection but finds consolation in the beautiful and crazy actresses he meets at auditions.

The Goldman Variations is a hilarious, utterly madcap one-man tour de force. All the characters are played by Tim Goldman, who flings himself from one side of the stage to the other thrusting wigs and funny hats on his head to represent the various roles he is playing. He does all this to Bach’s piano concerto (from which the title takes its name) which plays at the same furious pace as his acting, dancing and playing.

Goldman’s passion, verve and ability to pull the funniest of faces make the show riotously comic. One minute he’s out on a date with an actress who won’t stop laughing manically, the next he’s dancing with a French puppet called Monsieur Mole. There is never a dull moment. Goldman’s wit and energy guarantee a highly entertaining show.
