Award-winning Temple Theatre Company brings its new production Unmythable to the Ashmolean on Wednesday. The show forms part of the museum’s ongoing Greek Season, featuring the groundbreaking exhibition Heracles to Alexander the Great, and will take place among artifacts from the very era that inspires it.

Presenting the Greek myths in a new way, the company re-imagines the well-known tales in an entertaining and inventive fashion. Focusing on the familiar legend of Jason and the Argonauts, Unmythable offers an alternative narrative. Tales of such heroes as Heracles, Theseus and Odysseus; love stories as told by Orpheus; legends that explain the creation of the world and the dealings of the gods — we are promised them all.

Originally from Oxford, the Temple Theatre Company is now based in London and takes its critically lauded productions around the country, including dates at major summer festivals such as Latitude 2011. Its first major production, Out of Chaos, had a record-breaking run in London before touring Europe and winning Best Production at the ACT Festival in Bilbao and the Audience Prize at Berlin’s 100°Festival. In 2009, the company collaborated with Timberlake Wertenbaker on a new translation of Euripides’ Hippolytus.

Ticket holders are being invited to visit the groundbreaking exhibition Heracles to Alexander the Great in an exclusive, after-hours viewing. The Ashmolean displays more than 500 treasures excavated from the royal burial tombs and the grand palace of Aegae, with many objects being on show for the first time. The exhibition tells the story of the kings and queens who governed Macedon, ruling descendants of the legendary Heracles and the all-conquering Alexander the Great.

After the show, guests can join the cast in the Ashmolean’s splendid rooftop restaurant for drinks and a discussion about the play.
