Grouse is, as usual ,very expensive this year, but the ever-popular pheasant and partridge are great-value birds to try alongside mallard and good rich warming venison stews. The wines below have been carefully chosen because of their richness and complexity and also go well with a wide variety of winter dishes.

Monte Haro Rioja 2010, Spain
Soft and spicy with hints of cherry, this fruity wine is perfect for pheasant and game birds that have not been hung for too long. The wine’s freshness is a perfect compliment to juicy young partridges too.
Cotes du Rhone Rose Dieu 2010, France
A classic Grenache/Syrah blend from the warm Rhone Valley – spicy and beautifully structured with flavours of roast meat and bacon fat. Ideal with most game.
Los Haroldos Malbec 2011, Argentina
Succulent creamy and crunchy fruit, this wine is delightfully rich and soft and is a perfect match with venison or grouse.
Coorong Estate Shiraz 2012, Australia
A wonderfully ripe and smooth textured wine with spicy flavours of blackcurrants and plums, this is a great match with mallard or any other really rich game including wild boar sausages and well hung grouse.
