Artist Jayne Wilton comes to the Old Fire Station on Saturday to run an art workshop exploring the act of breathing

And Breathe… is an exploration of the act of breathing. I use art as a way to make visible the ephemeral human breath, creating installations, drawings, videos and sculptures. I see the breath as a unit of exchange between people and their environment and I use darkroom processes with drawing, photography, video and sound to capture the usually invisible trace of breath.

I have collaborated with several scientists to make the breath visible including physicist Peter Hobson at Brunel University where I travelled to CERN and record the breath of scientists involved in the discovery of the Higgs boson.

More recently I was awarded an Arts Council Grant for the Arts to work with Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to visualise the breath of staff and patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

I am currently a member of the Life of Breath project team, a five year Wellcome funded research project examining historical and cultural aspects of breathing and breathlessness – a project extending the boundaries of interdisciplinary research.

On Saturday, I’m excited to run a workshop for Fun Palaces – a nationwide celebration of art and science – and for another fantastic celebration of art: The Big Draw.

I have spent almost 10 years investigating the spectrum of creative possibilities that can spark from a pen on paper. All my work is a form of drawing, whether I’m etching, capturing the residue of graphite dust bursting on a bubble, or creating animation, 3D printing and camera-less photography. So applying the Big Draw label to my workshop blends nicely with the work.

Fun Palaces is inspired by theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price’s never-built vision of the Fun Palace; one venue for all arts and sciences, engaging and welcoming for all.

They want to make art more accessible to scientists, and science more engaging to people who would never think of it as ‘fun’.

The workshop starts at 1pm, and we’ll be using creative artistic techniques to explore breathing processes. Book your free place at ticketsoxford.com or 01865 305305.
