Phil Buckley has crafted his new comedy show around coming up with a big idea as he decides to go it alone for the first time

Have you ever had an earth shatteringly good idea? Well I haven’t. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an idiot (well not fully fledged anyway). I have just never had a eureka moment where I have had an idea so earth shatteringly good it is actually worth telling anyone other than my mum.

I never realised that I hadn’t had a good idea until I meet a 17-year-old boy called Jack who’s had a great one. You see Jack may have changed the world when he was just 15. At a school summer science project he did what scientists with millions of dollars-worth of research at their disposal have failed to do. He invented a test that uses a dipstick-type sensor to detect pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancer. Not only did he have this idea, he’s made it and it works… And what have I ever done?

I’m now 35 and the best idea I’ve ever had was the moment I realised you could put bacon on a veggie burger. If you have never tried it, do it’s amazing and it confuses the hell out of people when you order it.

As a stand-up comedian I’ve toured in the past with my own shows around the UK, America, Australia and New Zealand. I’ve spent the last three years supporting other acts including The Boy With Tape On His Face and Stephen K Amos and thinking of doing a tour of my own.

I was on the road with The Axis Of Awesome last year and mentioned it to the guys, who then announced my show whilst on stage in Leeds. So that was it. I was going to do a tour whether I wanted to or not, but what would it be about?

I was looking for a theme when I meet Jack and I was awe-inspired by this young man, I mean he’s really just showing us all up. So I decided to change this and make my mark on the world. I thought if I looked into what is needed to be a truly great idea, I could have the next great idea and share it with the world.

If you want to know if I managed it, I’m going to be at The Old Fire Station tonight so why not pop down and see my show? It may teach you a thing or two. And even if you don’t come to the show, still try the veggie burger with bacon, it’s just the best.
