Chile is all about clean, fruity and ultimately drinkable wines that are ideal with or without food. They are also good value summer wines that taste great outdoors because of their immediate fruit. Always a favourite wine country for wine personality Oz Clarke, we have included some of his Chilean selections from his Top 250 Wine Guide for 2010.
The Good Value Chile case costs £68 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
El Caballo ‘The Horse’ Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Central Valley: A delicious wine bursting with aromas of cut grass, lemon zest and gooseberries. Refreshingly crisp and dry on the palate with lively acidity and vibrant flavours of ripe tropical fruits.
Santiago Rosé 2008, Central Valley: Attractive coral pink in colour with alluring flavours of ripe cherry and strawberry. A summer classic which takes its name from Sant’iago or Saint James, the patron saint of Chile.
Rio Alto Classic Merlot 2009, Aconcagua Valley: “Rich, dark red plum and raisin stew. This is an excellent chunky, chewy red. You get some real sense of ripeness through that slight raisin taste, but the basic flavour is big, broad, plummy and fresh.” Oz Clarke – Top 250 Wine Guide 2010.
Nostros Reserva Pinot Noir 2009, Casablanca Valley: “I’m delighted to see more and more juicy, scented, irresistible Pinot Noir coming out of Chile. Every year, more good Pinot Noir vineyards spring up. Every year the wine is good. Every year it’s affordable. This Pinot has gentle loganberry and black plum fruit, a lush, almost fat, texture — but it’s beautifully balanced — and an exotic scent of eucalyptus.” Oz Clarke – Top 250 Wine Guide 2010.
