Arresting images of an English meadow by day and night are a compelling feature of this year’s Summer Exhibition at the Dadbrook Gallery, in Cuddington, near Thame.

They are the work of the award-winning young photographer Barney Wilczak (right) and taken from his newly published book The Meadow: An English Meadow through the Seasons (Frances Lincoln, £16).

The book is the result of three years of intense study by Barney of a precious wildflower meadow close to his Gloucestershire home. His aim is to encourage us to become more involved in conserving threatened habitats such as this.

Barney explained: “My work is largely focused on long-term projects, creating complete stories with strong narratives. These stories have invariably focused on the need for conservation. This has seen me documenting subjects as diverse as monkeys in Sri Lanka to the fruit forests of Kyrgyzstan, with conditions ranging from the tropics to blizzard swept mountains.

“My aim is to excite the viewer and encourage their relationship with, and appreciation of, the natural world.”

Also on show at the gallery — in a private house set amid glorious well-tended gardens — is work by Pam Armitage, Martin Cook, Qu Lei Lei, Jill Lush and Peter Rhoades.

The gallery is open daily (except Sunday, June 3) until June 9 from 10am to 5pm. For information call 01844 292459/07776 201062 or go to the website (www.dadbrookgallery.co.uk).
