Nicola Lisle is impressed yet again by a superb performance from Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra

Every time I review Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra I go along with high expectations, and am never disappointed. Sunday’s concert was another triumph for this exceptional orchestra and I found myself literally on the edge of my seat in the gallery, gripped by the drama, passion and energy unleashed below.

In the 150th anniversary year of the birth of Richard Strauss, it was appropriate to open with one of his most popular pieces, the Rosenkavalier Suite, which the orchestra has just toured the composer’s native Germany. This was a glorious start, with such a seemingly unstoppable flow of delicious melodies that it was hardly possible not to sway, all delivered with the technical artistry and maturity I have come to associate with this orchestra.

Respighi’s evocative The Pines of Rome, with pictures of the pines at various times of day, contrasted nicely with Strauss, and conductor John Traill ensured the different moods were eloquently realised, with the marching of a Roman army bringing the first half to a stirring finale. The OCYO finished with Shostakovich’s emotional fifth symphony, which the composer claimed was a criticism of communism. This was a simply stunning show, with impressive solos and an incredible display of musicianship, stamina and commitment.
