* If there’s one thing Oxford folk-pop act Stornoway adore, then it’s an interesting venue. We’ve seen them launch albums in snooker halls and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, the baroque splendour of Oxford Town Hall. In between, they have graced castles, ancient churches, old theatres, the Pyramid at Glastonbury and London’s Somerset House, Barbican, Forum and Camden Round House. On Wednesday they return to the scene of an earlier triumph — Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre. Brian, Oli and co previously played the Christopher Wren-designed venue in 2009, the first (and only) electrically amplified band to have done so. They return again on November 13 to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the laying of the theatre’s foundations. The band will play songs from their two full-length albums Beachcomber’s Windowsill and Tales From Terra Firma and last year’s mini album, You Don’t Know Anything as well as tunes from their forthcoming album due for release in the spring. They will be joined by the Oxford Millennium Orchestra.

* Another artist with a penchant for quirky venues is singer-songwriter Jess Hall. The gorgeously-voiced artist has played churches, bookshops and Oxford’s historic Holywell Music Room. Tonight (Thursday) she goes underground for a more conventional night of song down at The Cellar, in Frewin Court, to support Glaswegian alt-folk star Alasdair Roberts. Stornoway fans will also be delighted to learn Jess will be joined by the band’s Jon Ouin, as well as Duotone’s Barney Morse Brown — who both worked on her debut album Bookshelves. This will be their first live appearance since the album. The music starts at 8pm.
