It’s a decision that comes to us all – When do you leave the hedonism aside and knuckle down and get a proper job?

For most of us, of course, pleasure-seeking extends to a couple of pints at the weekend. If you’re a rising superstar DJ, however, the risks and rewards are magnified.

That struggle is at the heart of an acclaimed new film, which will be screened this week at the Phoenix Picturehouse, in Walton Street, Oxford.

Spanning two decades across Paris, New York and Chicago, French film Eden is an epic story of euphoria, melancholy and passion.

Co-written with her DJ brother Sven, Mia Hansen-Løve’s movie is the first to capture the spirit and adventure of the French house-music world.

It tells the story of Paul, a Paris DJ, who makes a name for himself by laying on garage-house parties.

Inspired by Daft Punk, he forms a DJ duo of his own and travels the world at the forefront of a musical revolution. However, as the hedonism of his youth gives way to the reality of his advancing years, Paul finds he has to choose between his dreams and responsibilities.

Eden’s soundtrack itself is a raver’s dream – featuring France’s Daft Punk alongside Americans Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Work and Joe Smooth – with anyone who lost themselves in the 90s club scene certain to find it particularly resonant.

* Eden opens at the Phoenix Picturehouse, Oxford tomorrow. Tickets are £10 for adults, £9 for students / concessions.
