The greatest, messiest rock fest of them all gets underway tomorrow with tens of thousands of predominantly young music-lovers shaking their stuff to a Who’s Who of pop, rock, metal and dance. Highlights look set to include headline sets by the Libertines, Metallica, and – for something more mannered – Mumford & Sons. Our money is also on Wolf Alice, The Maccabees, Alt J, Drengge, Royal Blood and The Cribs. Tickets have predictably sold out.

Oxfordshire’s longest-running festival settles into its new home on Thame Showground, after leaving its traditional home in Towersey village. A strong, heavily folky, line-up features Show of Hands, Joan Armatrading, Cowley lads Stornoway and 11-piece folk supergroup Bellowhead who will play their last festival gig, ahead of their forthcoming split. Don’t cry – party!

Tadstock
Kencot Hill Farm, near Brize Norton
Saturday

Yet another music festival but just for one day, and on the site of a solar farm. Despite being off many people’s radar, Tadstock (named after the site’s owner Tad Czapski) has been going for 10 years – but this is the first year it is advertised to the public. Bands include Dry the River and Ukey Dukes, King Soloman and Julia Harris, Awfully Nice, Grand Wa Zoo and Gigi St Philips.
