Singer Sam Smith has promised his fans a “happy and joyous” third album.

The chart-topping singer, who delighted the nation with his recent second record The Thrill Of It All, said that his next offering would have a less melancholy air.

His comments came as he filmed a performance for this week’s episode of The Graham Norton Show, appearing alongside the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Asked about the sorrowful messages behind songs such as his number one hit Too Good At Goodbyes, he said: “I’m not that guy and I’ve been really unlucky in love, but I enjoy writing love songs.

“I’m excited that the third one will be happy and joyous.”

Looking back over his career so far, he joked about his 2016 best original song Academy Award for his track Writing’s On The Wall.

“I can’t look at it,” he confessed.

“It’s hidden in my house. I’m waiting until I am 60 or 70 and then I will surround myself with my albums and my Oscar and cry and eat.”

His appearance on the show follows his Twitter announcement to fans that he is currently on a break from “work” for Christmas.
