Mira Sorvino has revealed she “burst out crying” after Sir Peter Jackson alleged disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein orchestrated a smear campaign against her.

The Oscar-winning actress said the Lord Of The Rings director’s comments confirmed her belief that Weinstein derailed her career after she rejected his advances in a hotel room in the mid-nineties.

She wrote on Twitter: “Just seeing this after I awoke, I burst out crying.

“There it is, confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure. Thank you Peter Jackson for being honest. I’m just heartsick.”

Earlier this week, Sir Peter told New Zealand news website Stuff that Weinstein had advised against casting Sorvino and Ashley Judd – who has also alleged harassment – for the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

He had been in early negotiations with Weinstein’s company, Miramax, to produce the films before instead teaming up with New Line Cinema.

He said he had “no direct experience or knowledge of the sexual allegations” against Weinstein but had made a decision to never work with him again.

“I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998,” Jackson said of Judd and Sorvino.

“At the time, we had no reason to question what these guys were telling us – but in hindsight, I realise that this was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing.

“I now suspect we were fed false information about both of these talented women – and as a direct result their names were removed from our casting list,” he added.

He also accused Weinstein and his brother, Bob, of behaving like “second-rate Mafia bullies”.

Sorvino, 50, was one of the first actresses to go public with allegations against Weinstein. She claimed in the New Yorker that Weinstein had chased her around a room after he started massaging her shoulders in a Toronto hotel room in 1995.

A few weeks later she claimed Weinstein showed up at her New York apartment after midnight but persuaded him to leave by saying her then boyfriend was en-route.

She told the magazine she believed it had negatively affected her career.

Judd also responded to Sir Peter’s comments, writing on Twitter: “I remember this well.”

Dozens of other actresses, including Rose McGowan, Asia Argento, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cara Delevingne, have made allegations of harassment and assault against Weinstein.

He has denied ever engaging in “non-consensual sexual conduct”.
