All our lives are a bit better if we make room for nature, states Wendy Tobitt of the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT)

Do something wild every day in June and make nature part of your life. 30 Days Wild is a new campaign run by The Wildlife Trusts to encourage more people to explore the natural world on their doorstep, and go a few miles further if you want to.

Wildlife and wild places are closer than you think, so when you sign up at wildlifetrusts.org/30dayswild you will receive information about local events and places you can explore in and around Oxfordshire.

30 Days Wild is part of a nationwide My Wild Life campaign to show how being in touch with wildlife makes a big difference to people’s lives.

Doyen of the natural world, Sir David Attenborough is endorsing My Wild Life: “People turn to nature in moments of joy and in moments of sadness, “ he said.

“We are part of the natural world: we depend on it for the air we breathe and the food we eat. The Wildlife Trusts are helping people to understand their role in the natural world and their dependency on it. This is essential if we are going to speed nature’s recovery.”

The Random Acts of Wildness are really easy – you can do them while you’re at work, on the school-run, or chilling out at the weekend. The chanc es are you have never realised how much nature is around you, so make space for it in June.

Stop for a few moments on your walk from the car park to the office, and take a look at the different coloured leaves and flowers of trees and shrubs; look at the shapes that nature makes.

Be inspired when you walk through the wild flowers on Iffley Meadows in Oxford, or spend a few moments admiring the spectacular view across the Thames from Hartslock nature reserve near Goring.

The Oxford Festival of Nature in the first two weeks of June coincides with the start of 30 Days Wild, so it will be easy to achieve lots of Random Acts of Wildness.

Take a Thames Wildlife Cruise with Oxford River Cruises and see how many kingfishers you spot as you glide down the river. The wildlife expert on each cruise will help you look out for riverside and watery wildlife.

Visit Wytham Woods with local experts to see badger setts and much more wildlife in this very special nature reserve looked after by Oxford University.

Or go on an Otter Walk beside the River Cherwell in Oxford and see if you can spot the distinctive paw marks of this elusive creature. Our wildlife experts will be laying crayfish traps in preparation for the next day’s event.

Become a citizen scientist and take part in online wildlife surveying for bees, butterflies and birds. Find out what it’s like to be a volunteer with the Wildlife Trust. We’re running taster days at our Oxford office in Littlemore for people who would like to try their hand at practical conservation work.
