Here’s the brief; take one of the world’s most famous ballet companies, arguably the greatest classical ballet of all time, reduce it from three hours to one, take it on tour around the country and perform it to an audience primarily made up of three-10-year-olds.

Phillipa White grew up in Blewbury and attended Didcot Girls’ School. At the same time she was taking ballet classes four days a week at the local Tetlow-Huhme Ballet studio. That sounds like serious intent, but at that stage it wasn’t.

Jasmin Vardimon has been in this country since she founded her company in 1997. They have appeared several times in Oxfordshire over the past few years, during which time her work has proved to be grippingly spiky, with powerful themes unflinchingly, dramatically put over: urban misery in Park, the holocaust in 7734, and a sort of ‘whodunnit’ in Justitia. Her new piece, Freedom was premiered at Sadlers Wells at the end of last year. I asked her what aspects of freedom she has explored.

This is the seventh year of Oxford’s dance festival, and it has been a great success. It’s taking place slightly later than in the past, starting on March 1, and will also be shorter, with two further groups of events later in the year, but as Claire Thompson told me, this doesn’t mean there is less material to see.

Erina Takahashi started dancing in her native Japan at the age of three, and began ballet classes at ten. It was immediately apparent that this was a girl with a lot of talent, and at 15 her parents sent her to this country to study at the English National Ballet School.

It takes a while to get to the bottom of the John Cooper Clarke story. According to him, when punk went out of fashion, he did too. What he doesn’t mention however, until much later in the interview, is his well-documented 20-year spiral into drug addiction, which decimated both his career and productivity.
