FOR many people 2016 has been pretty rubbish.

Prince, David Bowie and Sir Terry Wogan, to name just a few, have all left this world, there is a brutal civil war raging in Syria, a refugee crisis across the continent and, if you were a Remain voter, the summer wasn't much fun either.

Step forward Bourgeois & Maurice, who may or may not be aliens, to save civilisation.

The "neo cabaret" satirists set out their plans to rescue the world from almost certain destruction at the North Wall on Saturday.

In addition to possibly being aliens, they may or may not be brother and sister, and they may and may not have killed their parents in The Great Storm of 1987.

Regardless of all that, they were brash, outrageous and side-splittingly funny as they journeyed through the more controversial aspects of 21st century life.

On the day Jeremy Corbyn was re-elected leader of the Labour Party there was something very fitting about their skit on armchair activists, while their performance of their 2014 son Goodbye Europe has been brought bang up to date by Brexit.

With a brutally nihilist outlook (and an inside-out dress for much of the show) Maurice Maurice was perfectly placed to teach the audience about modern feminism.

She may have got it slightly wrong when she advocated killing all men, but if Donald Trump can become a US Presidential candidate, then perhaps anything goes.

Georgeois Bourgeois meanwhile revelled in creating a little bit of a stir with his outrageous performance of Chem Sex Party, which was almost as shocking as his luminous leotard.

He kept assuring the audience that cabaret really isn't very difficult, and it's fair to say the duo made it look easy.

But taking every miserable topic of the century so far and turning it into a hilarious song and dance routine cannot be a simple task by any stretch of the imagination.

Amazingly Bourgeois &Maurice managed to do just that.

There are plenty of false prophets claiming they will save the world in the next few years, but I'll take Bourgeois & Maurice any time.
