Katherine MacAlister is touched by the spirit of Shesus and the Sistas

Shesus & The Sistas certainly resurrected their rather startled audience when they appeared on stage at The Jericho Tavern.

Loosely based on a Catholic church service, the left-footers shifting uncomfortably in their seats as the curtain went up, they were relieved to find that Shesus and his dubious entourage Sister Mary Berry and Mother Pauline Hollywood, were not there to offend, but merely to entertain, a challenge they seized with glee and shook until it squealed.

For the all-enveloped audience, it was a delirious ride of hilarious antics, poignant verse, total participation, questionable confessions and the answers to all the big questions, loosely tied together with a fresh and ‘bloody’ fish, lots of innuendoes, a tenuous story-line, and an all-singing, all dancing performance.

More than anything Shesus & The Sistas provided some beltingly tidy, refreshingly novel and bitingly witty entertainment, all of which endeared us to the cause.

Think Sister Act crossed with Monty Python in a gimp mask. Sitting in the front row was perhaps a mistake, the lads at the back laughing heartily into their beers as I confessed, died, rose again and asked ‘where are we now’, while crying with laughter. My confessions were nothing compared to some of the audience’s admissions, which verged on the criminal, but what goes on tour stays on tour.

Twins sisters Lauren and Danielle Meehan, and Loose Baker however, take the full brunt and steer it ever onwards and upwards to a climactic finish involving the entire audience lying dead on the floor before eating kale, drinking milk, and then singing Happy Days.

Any doubters needn’t have worried, because while hedonistic, the sistas were far too interested in their audience’s enjoyment to worry about any theological complications.

Or as Mark Twain said: “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”
