The 2008 champion, Stuart Conquest, has made a late entry to this year’s British Championships which take place at the University of Kent in Canterbury starting Sunday. Former Cowley star Adam Hunt and Oxford 4NCL player Lateefah Messam-Sparks are also playing.

It was widely regarded as a mistake for Vishy Anand to agree to play BulgarianVeselin Topalov in Sofia. Last week, however, after a thrilling climax , the Indian, Anand, had won through. Exciting news is that it is widely predicted Anand’s next title defence will be against Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in London in 2012.

Oxford 1 win two to avoid drop

The final three rounds of the Four Nations Chess League took place over the Bank Holiday. In division 1, a disastrous round-seven defeat to Guildford 2 had left Oxford 1 needing to win two of the last three matches to avoid the drop.

Oxford 1 face relegation threat

Two disappointing results for Oxford 1 in the Four Nations Chess League have left them struggling to avoid relegation. Against a weak Guildford side in round seven, Oxford’s top boards self-destructed and they crashed to a 5-3 defeat. This result placed the side in the division one relegation pool, and another loss the following day means that only two good wins over the final weekend in May can save Oxford 1 from the drop.

How to deal with the Sicilian

By beating Wantage 1 last week, Oxford City 1 have won the Oxfordshire leagues first division for the third year in a row. City have lost only once and will do the double if they manage to beat Cowley 2 in the final of the Frank Wood Shield.

A City versus Cowley season

In the Oxfordshire Leagues it has become a City versus Cowley season. In division 4 City 5 have leapfrogged City 4 and Cowley 4 and are close to securing the title. At the top of division 3, City 3 and Cowley 3 are at loggerheads and division 2 sees City 2 and Cowley 2 battling it out for the top spot.

Cumbers takes 33rd Kidlington Congress

The 33rd Kidlington Congress took place last weekend and saw 174 players battling it out in three sections. In the bottom section — for those with a grade of 145 and below — Alan Heath from Milton Keynes triumphed. He beat Banbury’s Nathan Manley in the last round to take first place with a perfect 5 ahead of Sasa Rakovic and Dean Hartley — both on 4.5/5 In the (under 180) middle section, 14-year-old Bicester star, Georgs Vikanis finished in outright first with 4.5/5. There was a five-way tie for second place between Didcot’s Nick Gough, Bicester’s Marcus Harvey, MCSBlackbird’s Matthew Daggitt, David Cutmore and Mark Ruston.
