Personal Overview - Likely to be a moderate and fairly Euro enthusiastic member of the Conservative Party. He was a member of the Government between 1990 and 1997 known to his Civil Servants as Baldrick. A triple ballot support for Ken Clarke in 1997 helped to preclude the possibility of placement in the Hague Opposition Shadow team. He has a wide range of interests, particularly in Trade & Industry issues where he is a member of the relevant Select Committee. Regarded as a moderate Wet in the Party his education was at Leighton Park School, the Quaker public school. Within Parliament, was prepared to rebel against the party line over the 2003 Iraq War, supporting a motion that the case for war had not been established. He has also been involved in a a number of All Party Groups, including having chaired the Lighting Group and been a Vice Chairman of the Overseas Development Group. His interest in overseas issues is further highlighted by his having been on the Council of the Overseas Development Institute and Chatham House and a Governor of the Commonwealth Institute. After missing out on a Government role in the post election reshuffle, he was appointed as a consolation in June 2010 to the role of Second Church Estates Commissioner.

Previous Occupation - Worked in sales (1972-1980). Self-employed/Co-Director of a local business (1980-1999). Regional Liaison Officer for Caroline Lucas MEP (2002-2007).

Personal Overview - Replaced the outgoing Caroline Lucas here in June 2010 after she was successful in her bid to become the Green party's first MP at Westminster. He is an experienced Councillor, having led the Green Group in Brighton for a number of years. He has also shown an interest in foreign affairs issues, as a Councillor was active in campaigning to secure the release of Brighton resident Omar Degayes from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. He has also been involved in High Court action supporting families with Autistic children. Within the party, he has been a spokesperson on planning and regeneration as well as a Principal Speaker at the time when the party had not adopted a single leader. He has also been involved in policy development with the party election manifesto. Locally, he he is likely to have gained a good knowledge of his electoral region through his work for his predecessor.
