Cyclists stopped for not having lights on

OXFORD: A total of 178 cyclists were stopped by police for not having lights on Tuesday night.

Officers pulled over those without lights from two locations in High Street and one in Botley Road over three hours.

Those stopped have the choice of paying the £30 fine, disputing it in a magistrates’ court or avoiding the fine by buying cycle lights within seven days.

About 10,000 cyclists use Magdalen Br every day in term time, so that only 178 were stopped (some in Botley too) shows an amazing level of compliance, better rate than drink driving card drivers almost and much fewer than speeding cars!

Yeah alright, stop bashing the motorist. As I said on this same topic yesterday, car drivers need to check their lights too.

We all need to look out for each other, and then maybe there would be less accidents, but that means that everyone has the correct means of being seen on the roads.

There is a shocking lack of high-vis kit from pedestrians and cyclists, and a big problem with defective lights on cars.

"About 10,000 cyclists use Magdalen Br every day in term time,"

Is that an accurate figure?

Can you provide any evidence to back up your extraordinary 10,000 cyclists figure? Or have you just made it up?

Now, using figures what ARE real...
It was not all day, it was "over a three hour period".

Three hours = 180 mins.
178 pulled.
One per minute!

Sorry, what was that about how compliant cyclists are?

Tbones, there is nothing like a statistic, and yours IS nothing like a statistic, but as you see it was one cyclist a minute pulled over for an offence. Compared to drink driving in England and Wales, where enforcement is 24/7 and drivers were caught about every 7 minutes, it would be far less if the period was 3 hours and the locations publicised in the paper and website beforehand. As for speeding in one of the latest checks in Oxford over a 2 hour period 16 drivers were given tickets (no amnesty no speed aware course just an automatic fine and points) which is just over one driver every 8 minutes. those are REAL statistics, and I think bear heavily in favour of the driver in terms of numbers per minute, even with advance warning for the cyclist.

Of course cyclists should have lights on their bikes - and use them! This helps not only drivers but pedestrians to see them - as well as showing cyclists what is ahead. They should use them during the day as well as night-time as it makes them much easier to see. Lights are as important and necessary as helmets. One helps stop you getting into accidents, the other helps protect you if you do! Both should be compulsory.

That's probably only counting the cyclists that are cycling on the road!
