FOR grandmother Margaret McLuckie, Christmas two years ago was one of the hardest times her family has experienced.

Her grandson Rowan, who had been cared for in the Children’s Critical Care Unit at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital, died on December 14, 2010, when he was just six months old.

Now Mrs McLuckie is working to raise £3,000 for the nurses who cared for Rowan, who suffered from a heart condition, by offering shoppers at Oxford’s Westgate Shopping Centre a Christmas gift-wrapping service.

The 54-year-old former teacher from Didcot said: “We want to help them support other families who have to go through the same thing.”

Rowan’s mum and Mrs McLuckie’s daughter-in-law Helen McLuckie, 28, pictured front, from Didcot, said: “I am not surprised she is raising money for them, they did a very good job. We wanted to say thank you.”

Shoppers can get their gifts wrapped in exchange for a donation to the Children’s Critical Care Unit.

Mrs McLuckie is also appealing for donations of wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, gift tags and tape.

The gift wrapping desk is at the centre tomorrow from 9am-5.30pm and Monday from 9am-5pm.
