CHRISTMAS may be over but budding shepherds still have the chance to tend a flock.

Roly Puzey, 38, who runs Hill Farm Little Wittenham, near Abingdon, with his wife Camilla, said: “We started ‘Shepherd for a Day’ last year and believe we are still the only farm to offer the experience.

“Many people who learned shepherding with us did it at lambing time and loved it.”

The couple took on Hill Farm from the Northmoor Trust in 2009, after deciding to swap their office jobs for the farming life.

They now have a flock of 300 ewes and 70 ewe lambs.

Trying their hand – and their crooks – at the ancient skill last week were brothers William, left, and Jack Parry, from Little Wittenham.

William, nine, said: “It was really good fun. We rounded the sheep up into the pen with Belle the sheepdog.”

Jack, seven, said: “It wasn’t that difficult, but the sheep were a big naughty. They felt soft, prickly and cosy.”
