CAB in southern Oxfordshire gets £1m cash boost to aid public

THE Citizens’ Advice Bureau in southern Oxfordshire has received a funding boost of more than £1m to help with running costs.

The CAB runs offices in Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, Thame, and Henley.

From April, South Oxfordshire District Council is giving a grant of £662,480, while the Vale council is giving £414,852.

The money – over a four-year period – will help pay for running costs, staffing, heating, administration, volunteers’ expenses and rent.

Didcot CAB manager Judith Abela said: “We welcome this support.”

Thame branch manager Tom Fox added: “As independent charities we rely entirely on local donations. At a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet, the district councils’ commitment to the voluntary sector ensures that limited resources are being targeted at those who are in the greatest need.

“Without this financial help, CABs would be forced to drastically reduce services.”

Bill Service, cabinet member for grants at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “The CAB provides free, expert advice to many thousands of residents every year.

“It is an absolutely vital service, right at the heart of our communities and relies heavily on grants like ours to operate.”

Leader of Vale of White Horse District Council Matthew Barber said: “The CAB is a great organisation which offers fantastic advice to residents when they really need it.”

Eh, right! So, how much of this is new funding and how much recurring? Absent that bit of information, this may be nothing to write home about.
