'Senseless' vandals remove landslip safety barriers

VANDALS who have been moving safety barriers from the scene of a landslip have been warned they are putting people in danger.

The water-filled barriers are in place at the closure of Oxford Road, Hinksey Hill, to warn of severe damage.

Council chiefs believe the damage was caused because the sandy foundations and slope of the embankment became saturated by the significant wet weather.

The road was originally closed on December 20, but since then the road has cracked and a large hole has appeared.

The barriers, as well as signs, have been moved several times and the police have been informed.

Councillor Rodney Rose, deputy leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: “This is senseless.

“We are talking here about a badly damaged section of road yet some people seem to wish to open themselves or others up to danger by messing about with barriers and signage.

“We want this to stop and if anybody sees anything we hope they will report it to the police.”

Perhaps the action of shutting the road is causing people hassle and they want to get home etc, how about breaking the habit of a lifetime and repairing the road pronto, along with the rest of the county.

They'll be waiting for the cold weather to come and give them another excuse for delaying the repairs!

Why is this road still closed and unrepaired? If it was closed on 20 December they've had a lot of opportunity to fix it, even accouting for the Christmas break.

I suspect that it needs more than "repaired". Comprehensive stabilisation, underpinning and complete rebuild is more likely.

Wasn't also mentioned the other day that a major gas main also runs under the road? It's like that other utitlities will do too.

Didn't The Oxford Mail have a photo of some young boys looking over the barrier right at the spot the landslide happened? A little hypocrisy in your reporting, as you could only have reached the spot yourselves by moving the barriers .......

Yes, but they've still had a considerable amount of time to get started on working with those utilities. If this was Japan and there had been an earthquake that destroyed the road, it would have been fixed and open by now.

Maybe the local County Councillors could speed things up, as they can claim money from various County Council 'pots' though only Labour seem eager to get their names in front of the May voters, in that great 'photo-shoot opportunity' which is the run-up to elections. Is it true a Meerkat will be Standing as an independent?
