United fan find

Oxford University researchers say it is not true most Manchester United fans are in the South East.

The Oxford Internet Institute looked at the origins of tweets about rival clubs Manchester United and Manchester City this season, noting the traditional east-west split between fans in Manchester of the two clubs. It also suggested United did not have huge support in London and the South East.

It's a fact that the South East is full of armchair Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool fans who've never been to a game in their lives. It doesn't take research to establish that. Just go to a pub when 'Super Sunday' is on tv.

Actually demographic-based market research is important for many organisations, but I hope Man U paid for it rather than it coming out of the public purse.

It will come out of their general research grant, but the institute was founded with £10 million from a charitable trust, and £5 million of PUBLIC money, if that helps.
