Wolvercote Primary School praised for its outstanding leadership

GOVERNORS and senior teachers at Wolvercote Primary School have been told they are doing an outstanding job.

The First Turn school was given a “good” overall rating following an inspection last month, the results of which have just been made public, but was given the highest “outstanding” grade for leadership and management.

According to Ofsted inspector Steven Popper, children made excellent progress in the Early Years Foundation Stage, because of consistently outstanding teaching.

Behaviour was described as courteous and supportive, and the best teaching as highly creative and effective.

Mr Popper said: “Leadership is outstanding, because the swift action of governors and senior leaders has rapidly enhanced the quality of teaching and outcomes for pupils.”

Headteacher Frances Bartlett took charge in April last year.

The school, which has 250 pupils, did not secure the highest rating overall due to slower progress in maths and some lessons proceeding at a slower pace, resulting in children losing concentration and becoming restless. It was told to accelerate progress in maths to match good progress in reading and writing.

Mr Popper said: “The creative nature of many lessons ensures that the learning is of high quality.”
