Traveller's funeral "could attract 1,000 mourners"

UP to 1,000 people are expected at a traveller’s funeral in Wantage today.

Police warned local businesses to expect hundreds of people in town for the occasion.

The service will be held at 2pm at the Church of SS Peter and Paul.

Police spokesman Rhianne Pope said: “There will be a funeral this afternoon in Wantage, with a large turn-out of mourners expected.

“Neighbourhood officers spoke to local pubs and businesses in the town, just to inform them of the large number of people expected today.”

It'll be a well needed good days takings for the pubs, I just hope they have the nous to get in plastic glasses.

You will probably find that the pubs will close today as a damage limiting precaution. So the takings for the day will be lower than normal!

I know this happened in North Oxford when a traveler funeral was happening at the Wolvercote Cemetery.

Why would they close, when a large number of prospective customers will be needing refreshment before and after the ceremony, it seems rather silly to turn away trade in these hard times.

There was one in Abingdon not so long ago. Spring Road was impassable with four-wheel-drives and Jags parking both sides the length of the road. I hadn't thought about this before, but I'd have expected travelers to have a regional graveyard dedicated to them so they could all be laid to rest together rather than scattered around the area. Interesting.
