WORK has begun on a scheme allowing people to hire Brompton bicycles from Oxford Rail Station.

Brompton Dock, a sister firm of the Brompton cycle company, will offer a fully-automated system allowing users 24-hour access to 40 folding bikes which can be taken on trains during peak times.

Workers were installing the docking system at the station yesterday, pictured, and the bikes will soon be in place.

The dock is being put in place next to the Botley Road footbridge on the station side and is expected to be up and running within a fortnight. Once online you will be able to borrow a bicycle by registering with Brompton Dock and using a PIN which will be sent to your mobile phone via text. Borrowing a Brompton costs up to £5-a- day.

The scheme was initially announced in early October but was delayed to allow First Great Western to fill out the correct paperwork.

Brompton Dock managing director Mark Antwis said: “We have got to do some live testing on it first, and then it will be a case of training some staff.”

Will a copy of the highway code be attached to these? Will lights also be attached to bikes? They also should have a few lessons before being allowed on the bikes, explain to them what a red light means!!

because it couldn't have been a police van on my right had side as I was on my 'cycle outside the courts (on St Aldate's, junction of Speedwell Street, going into town) waiting for the lights that I most demonstrably looked to check for any indicators, not once but twice (the second after a long enough pause to turn indicators on, imho), and seeing none, might expect not to have been cut into by them turning left when the lights changed, but no.

There are bad road users in all parties, even the ones you expect to have the highest standards.

The front dynamo hub, front light and rear light can all be seen in the photograph. I think (just like renting a car), you're responsible for providing your own gloves, maps, and driving knowledge. Note that the user in the high-via here as managed to get the front wheel back-to-front, so the light attached to the front wheel is facing backwards.
