Work set to start on Faringdon supermarket

AFTER two years, work is finally set to start on a supermarket in Faringdon.

Tesco has had permission to build the 2,140sqm store on land in Park Road since 2011 but construction has yet to get under way.

Yesterday it was announced the store would open by the end of the year.

Spokesman for Tesco, Beth Greenhouse, said it would “create 150 new jobs for people in the local community. “Building work will begin on site in the coming weeks.”

In 2011, Tesco won an appeal against Vale of White Horse District Council’s 2010 rejection of planning permission for the site.

Ms Greenhouse did not comment on why there had been a delay in work starting but a Tesco spokesman had previously said it would have to fit in with the company’s “development programme”.

Tesco has also had planning permission to turn the former Fox and Hounds pub in Abingdon Road into a supermarket since last January but work has yet to start.

And the old Friar pub in Marston was given approval in June 2011 but no work has begun.

Hooray, hopefully they can fill the pot holes in Park Road at the same time.
