Police crack down on errant cyclists

Police are holding a two-day operation to monitor cyclists who flout rules on pavement riding.

Cyclists spotted in High Street and Parsons Street today and tomorrow will be issued with an on-the-spot £30 fine.

Persistent offenders will be reported or taken to court.

Police said the crackdown was in response to cyclists continuing to flout ‘no cycling’ signs and persistently riding the wrong way down both streets.

They should also crack down on cyclists that cycle on the road when there are perfectly good cycle paths next to them, they are usually there because of the number of accidents involving cyclists and cars on those particular roads.

I am a keen cyclist but would much rather use a cycle path than a busy road! I've had many of near misses when old biddies that can barely see at the best of times, let alone when driving have not given me enough room on the road!

Don't see how the police can be expected to crack down on cyclists that aren't breaking any law! Most of the so called cycle paths round Oxford are just bits of pavements pinched off the poor pedestrians to appease motorists and inexperienced cyclists. The only roadside ones round Oxford I regard as safer than using the road are those by the ring road and the Marston Ferry and even these become dangerous when it's icy as they rarely get gritted.

Anyway where's Parsons Street? I wish the Oxford Mail would make it clear when it's writing about Banbury - we've got a High Street here in Oxford too you know!

A lot of the cycle paths are rubbish - strewn with grit and broken glass, bumpy as pluck, and with give way lines at every minor turning.

They might be fine for kids but they're useles for getting around on.

When are they next doing Seacourt, so I can avoid the bus lane.

Why do they keep giving advance warning? It's hardly a "crackdown" if you tell people when it's happening!

Icba, you're allowed to cycle in bus lanes.

Are they going to have a similar crackdown on motor vehicles being driven on the pavement?

How about cracking down on texting and hands-on phoning while driving? I see it several times a day, and it presents a real danger. It's almost as prevalent as cyclists jumping red lights and just as idiotic.
