A CRASH close to junction nine of the M40 near Bicester closed both carriageways of the A34 yesterday morning.

The accident, involving a Porsche and a van, happened at about 7.30am on the southbound carriageway, between junction nine of the M40 and the B430 at Weston-on-the-Green. The car came off the road and went into a ditch.

Thames Valley Police spokesman James Williams said: “The accident happened on the southbound carriageway but the northbound carriageway was closed to allow the air ambulance to land.

“The driver of the car was taken to hospital suffering head injuries.

“There were traffic queues in both directions and drivers were advised to avoid the area.”

There were tailbacks around the junction nine roundabout, on the M40, and on the A41 tailing back to Bicester.

Gill Hodgetts, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance, said: “We were alerted at 7.26am and sent an air ambulance and staff in three vehicles.

“The air ambulance wasn’t needed and one driver was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford by ambulance.

“A second patient was treated at the scene.”

The northbound carriageway of the A34 reopened about 8am while the southbound carriageway reopened before noon.

Vehicles travel too-fast on this and many other roads, and all vehicles can and often do have mechanical and electrical problems - including tyre blow-outs. Added to which the greatest threat of all - from the driver, who can be on drugs, boozed-up, or suffer from heart-attack.
