Oxford Castle exhibition probes art's link to science

WORK by people with neurological conditions looks at the link between art and science at an exhibition.

Affecting Perception: Art & Neuroscience at Oxford Castle’s O3 Gallery features 31 paintings by people with brain conditions.

Co-creator Martha Crawford – pictured right with fellow curators Rachel Stratton, left and Cosima Gretton – said: “It is about raising awareness of these conditions in the wider community and understanding more about why we produce art and how our brains work.”

Among the featured artists are Gormenghast author Mervyn Peake, who died in 1968 from premature senility. He is thought to have suffered from a rare form of neurodegenerativedisease, Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

The free exhibition – which runs at the gallery to the end of the month – also includes work produced at city workshops in venues like Modern Art Oxford. Topics include the link between art and conditions like Alzheimer’s, autism and Asperger’s.
