Clock goes back in Oxford High School science lesson
OXFORD High School pupils turned back the clock to learn about science yesterday. Year Seven girls joined in a Victorian lab session, where they created oxygen from bleach using raw liver, and exploded a balloon full of hydrogen.
They were celebrating the school’s 138th birthday as well as Oxfordshire Science Festival this month, which is supported by the Oxford Mail. Science teacher Maria Whittington, pictured with Rachel Goodwin, left, and Lizzie Baker, centre, said: “It was absolutely spectacular.
“We created oxygen by decomposing hydrogen peroxide with liver and tested it by using a glowing splint. Then we filled a balloon with hydrogen and set fire to it. It made a really big bang, like a small mortar.”
The students were also entertaining two parliamentary science advisers, Dr Sarah Bunn and Dr Martin Griffiths, who came to observe.
