Rugby club gets a revamp in drive to attract new members
A CLUBHOUSE is being spruced up this summer as part of a £6,000 refurbishment. Littlemore Rugby Club received £3,000 from the Rugby Football Union, which was match-funded from the club’s own funds to refurbish the interior of their club house in the grounds of Oxford Academy in Sandy Lane West.
It is hoped the revamp to the 28-year-old building – which includes new seating, ceiling and lighting – will attract new members to the club.
President Tim Stevens said: “The clubhouse was built by club members.
“We got a loan from Morrells Brewery and the bank. We put the money together to build the clubhouse, which was a prefabricated classroom.
“We have not done much to the facility since that time.”
Mr Stevens added: “It looks a bit dated now. Someone who had seen it before will come in when it is finished and notice the difference.
“Hopefully it will be more welcoming to new members. It needs freshening up.”
The bar and lounge area is being decorated, all the seating is being redone and the ceiling is being lowered.
It is hoped the work will be finished this week. Another £500 grant from the RFU in June meant club members could carry out work to the exterior of the building including replacing fascia boards and guttering, renewing the soak-away and improving the patio area.
Mr Stevens said: “It is to make it nice for existing members and also to get new rugby members and also social members.”
The club – which plays in the Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire Premier Division – currently has 180 members, with 60 rugby playing members.
Its junior side for five to 16-year-old youngsters started in January this year and currently has 25 members aged five to 10 years old and new members are welcome.
Chairman Tim James, a carpenter from Sandford, said: “It has been brilliant. This is the first grant we have had, we have always raised money to do this at the club.
“It brings the playing side and the social side together more.”
The club is welcoming new members, both playing and social. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 7pm-11pm and Saturday and Sundays from noon to 11pm.
Pre-season rugby training has started on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. The junior side will start again in September.
