Shops queue to join as card gets revenue rolling

FIFTY-FIVE businesses and 1,000 shoppers have signed up to a scheme to keep money in Wantage and Grove.
Grove Pet Shop has become one of the latest to sign up to the Wantage and Grove Loyalty Card scheme, and says it has already been a boost to business.
In the last month 10 new shops have signed up to the scheme, which rewards shoppers for buying independent.
Wantage’s town team co-ordinators, Iain Nicholson and Mim Norvell, who are running the scheme, have also introduced a new optional stamp card that rewards shoppers by giving money back after they spend a certain amount.
There are now 55 independent retailers using the scheme and more than 1,400 card holders.
Pet shop owner Darren Nobbs said signing up in July had raised people’s awareness of his shop and he had had more customers.
He put the additional revenue into sponsoring Grove Challenger’s girls under-nines football team by buying them new shirts.
Mr Nobbs, 42, said: “It is about giving back to the community who have given to us. If there isn’t a community there couldn’t be local, independent shops. You don’t get the same service in chain stores: we offer advice and people can come in and have a chat.”
